많은 경우 DMin에 대한 명확한 이해를 갖고 프로그램을 운영하는 신학교를 찾아보기 힘듭니다.
DMin 과정의 교수나 학생 역시 DMin에 대한 이해함 없이 MDiv의 연장 혹은 심화 과정으로 생각합니다. 아니면 PhD를 할 만한 여건이 되지 않기 때문에 그 대신에 선택하는 학위 정도로 인식합니다.
이러한 이유로 대부분의 신학교에서 운영하는 DMin 프로그램은 사실상 DMin의 목적과 목표에 벗어나 설계되고 운영되어 왔습니다.

DMin의 정의
만약 단순히 이력서에 DMin 학위 한줄을 추가하기 위함이 아닌 사역과 자신의 미래에 대한 깊은 고민을 위해 DMin을 고려하고 있고 있다면 이 글을 필독 하시길 권면해 드립니다. 최소한 2년 6개월이라는 시간과 적지 않은 재정을 투자하는 학생에게 DMin에 대하여 명확한 이해를 시키는 것은 책임있는 학교의 당연한 의무입니다. 이를 위해 신학교협의회(ATS)의 자료를 통해 DMin의 정의와 학문적 위치, 그리고 DMin의 프로세스에 대하여 간략히 말씀 드리고자 합니다.
The Doctor of Ministry (DMin) is a degree designed for practitioners in the field of ministry. The DMin degree is addressed by the Standards of Accreditation in Degree Program E, which commends the following goals of a DMin programs to ATS-member schools in Degree Program E, section E.1.2.1: “1) an advanced understanding of the nature and purposes of ministry, 2) enhanced competencies in pastoral analysis and ministerial skills, 3) the integration of these dimensions into the theologically reflective practice of ministry, 4) new knowledge about the practice of ministry, 5) continued growth in spiritual maturity, and 6) development and appropriation of a personal and professional ethic with focused study on ethical standards and mature conduct in the profession.” (Educational Models and Practices Peer Group Final Reports, 2017:75)
ATS에 따르면 DMin은 사역 분야의 실무자들, 즉 사역자들을 위해 설계된 학위입니다. 그렇기 때문에 DMin 프로그램은 신학 분야의 새롭고 다양한 이론들을 연구하는 것을 목표로 하지 않습니다. 오히려 DMin은 사역에 대한 기획과 분석, 실행과 성취, 평가와 같은 실제적인 내용에 있어서 실천을 위한 전문성을 목표로 합니다.

DMin은 리더십 이슈와 사역에서의 실패 또는 조직 관리 차원에서의 어려움 등의 문제를 전문적으로 해결해 가는 과정을 경험합니다.
하나의 문제를 해결함으로 또다른 문제를 해결하며 이를 통해 누군가의 문제를 함께 도울 수 있는 전문가로서 능력을 배양합니다.

DMin은 실천 신학의 분야에 위치해 있습니다. 많은 경우 DMin을 마치 PhD 보다는 학문적 수준이 낮은 것으로 생각합니다. 그러나 DMin은 이론을 중심으로 다루는 PhD와 전혀 다른 분야의 학위이며, 그 과정과 결과(Outcome) 또한 지향하는 바가 전혀 다릅니다. 특별히 DMin은 이론을 만드는 과정이 아닌, 자신의 사역 상황에 적합한 이론을 적용하는 것을 강조합니다.
The DMin project involves approaching a ministry problem, designing a project, and conducting research. The DMin project should “reflect the candidate’s depth of theological insight in relation to ministry” (E.2.4.2). DMin research usually employs methods from the social sciences and field research. In the course of DMin research, new knowledge is gained that is intended to contribute to the understanding and practice of ministry. DMin projects usually involve practice-based research, in which the validity of a practice derives from its outcome, providing an objective means to evaluate whether an approach has produced desired results. DMin의 최종 결과물인 프로젝트는 사역의 문제 해결과 기획을 위한 실제적인 연구를 통한 실천입니다. 그렇기 때문에 DMin 과정은 이를 이뤄가는 사회 과학 및 현장 연구 방식을 지향합니다. 이를 통해 자신과 사역에 대하여 분석, 평가할 뿐만 아니라 기획을 통해 실행하는 과정입니다.
정리하자면, DMin 과정은 새로운 신학적 지식을 쌓거나 이론을 만들기 위한 과정이 아니라, 자신의 사역 현장에 실제로 적용하기 위한 연구 입니다. 그렇기 때문에 DMin의 과정과 결과물은 이것을 잘 도울 수 있도록 설계되어야 합니다.
